The Cantigny Experience at a glance:

Garden Tours

While Horticulture staff present free monthly tours (March-November, first Tuesday of the month at 11am), we are pleased to offer private garden tours for your group on an availability basis.  We offer these two tour options:

Formal Gardens & Idea Garden Tour

On first impression, the beauty and tranquility of Cantigny Gardens will take your breath away.  Nestled among 29 acres are beautiful landscapes that showcase the lifecycles of trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals in stunning displays that perform well in a Midwest climate.

Areas to be toured  within the Formal Gardens will vary depending on what is currently in bloom and may include the Fountain Garden, Rock and Dryland Gardens, Rose Garden, Octagon Garden and many beds within the Upper and Lower Bur Oak Gardens, as well as a variety of specimen trees along the journey.  You will also stop at the Idea Garden (see description below).  The fee charged is based on number of guests (see fee listing below).

Your tour will depart from the Visitors Center and last approximately 45 minutes.  Following your guided tour, you are welcome to continue to enjoy the gardens at your own pace.

Idea Garden Tour

The Idea Garden was designed for the amateur gardener in all of us and seeks to educate and inspire creativity. This one-acre garden is intensively planted with a wide variety of plant material--some will spark new ideas and some will satisfy a nostalgic craving.

Within the Idea Garden we offer three themed areas:  The Alphabet Trail is geared for the young and young at heart--As a youngster walks the path learning her ABC’s, adults can be entertained by learning a plant’s Latin and common name or pointing out a fun object that begins with that letter of the alphabet. Walk thru the Seasons displays plantings that shine in the particular season they are planted in; perhaps you have a bare spot in your own landscape that could benefit from a variety we have displayed.  Our third section holds various themed beds that will display a variety of vegetables, herbs, and tropical plantings as well as annuals and perennials.
Your tour will depart from the Visitors Center and last approximately 45 minutes.  Following your guided tour, you are welcome to continue to enjoy the gardens at your own pace.
