Task Force Bayonet
Task Force Bayonet: The Illinois Army National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 178th Infantry Regiment 2008-2009 deployment to Afghanistan attached to 3rd Brigade (Task Force Duke), 1st Infantry Division
Illinois’ all-African American 8th Infantry Regiment, who earned its fame during World War I as the 370th Infantry Regiment, lives on through the 1st Battalion, 178th Infantry Regiment headquartered on 52nd and Cottage Grove in Chicago. The 1st Battalion, 178th Infantry Regiment (Task Force Bayonet) deployed to the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in 2008 to 2009 with the 33rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team which was the largest call-up of Illinois National Guardsmen since World War II. Unlike the other formations within the 33rd Brigade, Task Force Bayonet was a battle-space owner attached to Task Force Duke (3rd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division).
In a panel discussion format, members of the command team and battle staff will share experiences and lessons learned during their year-long combat deployment to the Laghman Province, and reflect on their relationship with Task Force Duke.
