SUMMARY:Paws in the Park Day
DESCRIPTION:Paws in the Park\nMondays\, March through October (excluding holidays)\nParking fee: $6 \nCalling all dog lovers! Get ready for some tail-wagging fun. Mondays are designated as “Paws in the Park Days” (excluding holidays like Labor Day and Indigenous People’s Day). So\, grab your four-legged companion\, hop in the car\, and get ready for some Barks and Recreation time in our beautiful gardens! \nJust a few doggone reminders: all visiting dogs should be social butterflies\, spreading waggy tails and love to fellow pups and humans alike. Don’t forget to bring along proof of up-to-date vaccinations for the safety of all. To keep everyone in check\, we kindly request that dogs remain on leashes and accompanied by their humans at all times. You’ll find sanitation stations throughout the park\, so please be on POOch Patrol and clean up after your pal. \nWhile our buildings are off-limits to our furry pals\, they’re guaranteed to have a blast exploring the great outdoors. So\, let the barking begin\, and let’s make sure our furry guests have an absolute ball! The park is open until sunset.\n\nPurchase Parking \nDog Policies\n\nFour-legged visitors must be friendly around fellow pups and humans alike.\nFor the safety of all\, be prepared to show proof of up-to-date vaccinations.\nDogs must remain on leashes and accompanied by their masters at all times. Retractable leashes are not permitted.\nSanitation stations are located throughout the park. Always clean up after your pet.\nDogs are not permitted inside Cantigny buildings.

SUMMARY:Old Town School of Folk Music Americana Series
DESCRIPTION:Old Town School of Folk Music Americana Series\nBeer Garden\nSelect Sundays\, 3:30 – 5:45 pm \nCelebrate America 250 with Cantigny and the Old Town School of Folk Music! This limited series brings a musically diverse group of performers to the Beer Garden to honor the roots of American music. Enjoy a summer Sunday afternoon with food\, drinks\, and entertainment surrounded by the beauty of Cantigny’s Gardens. \nPurchase Parking \nSchedule\n\nChris Walz\, July 12\nChris Walz\, a musician’s musician\, a performer and esteemed educator at Chicago’s OldTown School of Folk Music for roughly the past three decades. Chris’s passion in discovering the music he now plays came from listening as a boy to the radio – including the “Bluegrass Ramble” on WCNY in upstate New York. Radio being the window into a new musical landscape broadened the young Chris Walz’s desires\, passions\, and indeed aptitudes\, resulting in him becoming the respected and multi-dimensional artist he is today. \nDuring his youth\, excited by hearing various programs from bluegrass to blues\, it was one particular night that ignited Chris to figure out how to play fingerstyle on the guitar: he heard an entire show of Mississippi John Hurt music\, and this was the genesis of Chris’s style he plays on this album. You’ll also hear strains of his favorite artists\, along with his other influences including Blind Willie McTell\, Stefan Grossman\, and John Renbourn. Chris’s resonant vocals\, his intuitive prowess on the guitar as his sole accompaniment\, and a selection of songs that Chris puts his own unique stamp on\, culminates in how these artists have helped shape Chris while honoring them all. \n\n\nThe Bear Williams Trio\, July 26\nThe Bear Williams Trio delivers an engaging blend of blues\, soul\, folk\, and roots music led by acclaimed bassist\, vocalist\, songwriter\, and educator Bear Williams. Drawing from a career that includes 21 years with Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly and performances alongside some of music’s most respected artists\, the trio combines exceptional musicianship\, rich storytelling\, and audience-friendly performances that celebrate the heart and soul of American music. \n\n\nSlapdash Bluegrass\, August 2\nSlapdash Bluegrass is a string band rooted in the bluff country of southeast Minnesota\, southwest Wisconsin\, and northeast Iowa. Centering a love of folk traditions\, tight vocal harmony\, and instrumental prowess\, a Slapdash show is a celebration of community. From festival stages to dive bars to fellowship halls\, Slapdash Bluegrass draws a crowd with foot-stomping\, finger-blazing barn burners\, and keeps that crowd with nuanced writing and charm. \n\n\nGreat American Jukebox\, August 9\nThe story of American music with Michael J. Miles & Jill Kaeding\nMiles and Kaeding bring together their highly acclaimed newest work\, the “Great American Jukebox” of classic hit songs\, reimagined for acoustic guitar and cello\, combined with Miles’ historic and internationally renowned work on the banjo\, to present a thrilling portrait of America through its songs and stories. \n\n\nCicada Summer\, August 16\nIn the heart of Chicago\, there’s a band playing the songs of summer all year round\, and like their namesake this little band makes a big sound. Inspired by bluegrass\, Irish and folk music traditions\, CICADA SUMMER brews up a warm acoustic blend of tunes spiced with a pinch of city flair. Their energetic sets feature sunny vocal harmonies\, folksy favorites\, scattered fiddle tunes\, golden oldies\, and even the occasional pop-hit gone acoustic. Tap your toes and hum along to some strings on wings! \n\n\nLos Gallos\, August 23\nLos Gallos are Chicago’s premier Tex-Mex/ Americana Roots band. Transcending musical borders\, Los Gallos are known for their unsegregated sound. Their roots-oriented style honors their collective musical inheritance by drawing upon traditional Latin sounds and American vibes. Los Gallos seamlessly fuse an eclectic mix of Cumbia\, Norteño and Bolero with Country\, Rock and Blues to create their innovative signature sound. \nPurchase Parking

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT - Date with History
DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT – Date with History\nThe American Revolution and the Fate of the World\nVisitors Center Theater\nWednesday July 29\, 6pm \nSpace is limited\, advance registration is required. Parking is free with advance online registration. \nJoin us for an evening lecture with Dr. Richard Bell on his latest book The American Revolution and the Fate of the World — an electrifying global history of a not-so local war. \nWhen we think of the American Revolution\, we often picture a parochial drama: thirteen colonies squaring off against the British Crown in a spirited bid for independence. But this version of the story is only half the truth — and perhaps not even the most interesting half. In this riveting program\, historian and author Richard Bell invites audiences to rediscover the Revolution as a world war that unleashed chaos\, opportunity\, and transformation across six continents. From the sugar fields of the Caribbean to the court of the King of Mysore\, from refugee camps on the Canadian frontier to political uprisings in Sierra Leone and Peru\, the war that gave birth to the United States was never simply America’s own. It was a seismic global event that redrew maps\, toppled hierarchies\, catalyzed migration\, and accelerated new movements for liberty — and for empire. \nIn this program\, Bell traces the far-flung reverberations of the war through the lives of the people it displaced\, empowered\, or destroyed. Participants will encounter a Native matriarch struggling to preserve a transatlantic military alliance\, a Prussian officer reinventing himself in a foreign army\, and a Boston schoolteacher shipwrecked thousands of miles from home. Along the way\, Bell explores how the Revolution stirred a transoceanic refugee crisis\, ignited antislavery activism\, and inspired uprisings from Ireland to India. The program offers a bold new framework for understanding the Revolutionary War not as a tidy founding moment but as a sprawling\, high-stakes struggle fought on land and sea\, shaped by commerce\, diplomacy\, propaganda\, and contingency. This is the American Revolution as you’ve never seen it before: complex\, global\, and astonishingly relevant to the modern world. \nAbout the Author\nRichard Bell is Professor of History at the University of Maryland and author of the book Stolen: Five Free Boys Kidnapped into Slavery and their Astonishing Odyssey Home which was a finalist for the George Washington Prize and the Harriet Tubman Prize. He has held major research fellowships at Yale\, Cambridge\, and the Library of Congress and is the recipient of the National Endowment of the Humanities Public Scholar award and the Andrew Carnegie Fellowship. His new book\, The American Revolution and the Fate of the World was published by Penguin in November 2025. He maintains a list of upcoming events at Richard-Bell.com.
