Teaching Vietnam

Context and Perspectives on America’s War in Southeast Asia

Northern Illinois University’s Center for Southeast Asian Studies, in collaboration with the First Division Museum at Cantigny Park, invite area high school and community college educators to a half-day teaching conference about the Vietnam War. The conference will take place in the Medill Room of the Visitors Center.

Conference takeaways:

• Curriculum ideas.
• Teaching materials on a variety of topics related to the war.

Conference Schedule
8:30-9 a.m.
Welcome reception (refreshments served)

9-10:20 a.m.
The Vietnam War in historical and global context:

10:40 a.m. to noon
Teaching the Vietnam War methods:

Noon to 1 p.m.
Optional lunch with Vietnam veterans group

1-2 p.m.
A date with history book release reception — Swamp Rats. Swamp Rats: Soldiers Recollections of Vietnam and the Big Red One, edited by Tom Mercer. Second in a book series published by
the First Division Museum describing soldiers’ experiences serving in Company C, or “Charlie Company,” in the 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry, 1st  Infantry Division.

Registration Free
First 20 registrants will be eligible for mileage reimbursement.
$5 parking fee waived for all conference attendees.
Light breakfast and optional lunch provided.
Self-guided tour of park grounds and museum also
available for those interested.
