Since 2004\, suburban Chicago newspaper readers have enjoyed “Words on Birds” by Jeff Reiter. His new book\, from Chicago’s Eckhartz Press\, is a collection of favorite columns\, selected for their appeal to every kind of birdwatcher. New birders will find helpful guidance\, and all will appreciate Jeff’s engaging and insider’s approach to the fast-growing pastime. With stories about the backyard and “everyday” birds to tales of rare-bird stakeouts and cross-country adventures\, Jeff personifies the hobby’s broad and addictive appeal. Along the way\, he urges readers to enjoy birding on their own terms\, at their own pace. The payoff is a closer connection with nature\, a proven mental health benefit. \nStick around after the presentation for book sales and signings. Copies of the book will be available for $20 (cash\, check\, or Venmo)\n\nRegister \nAbout the Author\n \nJeff Reiter became a serious birder in 1994\, the same day he encountered a striking little bird while on vacation in South Carolina. Within hours he learned the name of it\, Hooded Warbler. The experience rekindled a boyhood passion for birds and nature. Jeff has been watching birds closely ever since — at home\, in the field\, at birding festivals\, and on family trips. In 2004\, he began writing “Words on Birds\,” a newspaper column in suburban Chicago devoted to birds\, birding\, and birders. His enthusiasm for the hobby shines through\, appealing to serious and casual birders alike. He encourages new birdwatchers\, especially kids\, who might find their spark just outside the kitchen window. Jeff retired from Cantigny in 2024 after 16 years in communications. Naturally\, he also led bird walks at the park. Jeff and his wife Catherine live in Glen Ellyn.

To keep everyone in check\, we kindly request that dogs remain on leashes and accompanied by their humans at all times. You’ll find sanitation stations throughout the park\, so please be on POOch Patrol and clean up after your pal. \nWhile our buildings are off-limits to our furry pals\, they’re guaranteed to have a blast exploring the great outdoors. So\, let the barking begin\, and let’s make sure our furry guests have an absolute ball! SUMMARY:Accessible Birding
DESCRIPTION:Accessible Birding\nVisitors Center\nWednesday\, September 17\, 8:30 am \nAccessible Birding events at Cantigny aim to make a fun activity available to all. Ideal for those with limited mobility\, the outing will last about 90 minutes or maybe a bit longer if we get carried away. Participants should feel free to stay as long as they wish. We will be on firm or hard surfaces — fine for those using canes\, walkers and wheelchairs. We’ll search for birds at a slow and easy pace\, staying fairly close to the Visitors Center. \nBeginning birders are welcome\, and binoculars will be available for borrowing (first come\, first serve). Wheelchairs are also available for sign-out at the Visitors Center information kiosk. \nLimit 15 participants (including caregivers).  All must register (including Cantigny Park members) by using the button below.
