Established by Jeff Lindberg and the late Steve Jensen\, the ensemble solidified its reputation early on by opening the first-ever Chicago Jazz Festival in 1979. Over the past four decades\, the CJO has cemented its status as a cornerstone of Chicago’s jazz scene\, maintaining a commitment to performing\, preserving\, and advancing the artistry of big band jazz. \nComposed of top-tier Chicago musicians\, the orchestra is renowned for its versatile repertoire and authentic performances of classic big band swing\, as well as modern arrangements. Under the direction of Jeff Lindberg\, the CJO has garnered national acclaim\, often cited as one of the finest jazz repertory orchestras in the country\, having performed numerous times for the Kennedy Center Honors Gala in Washington\, D.C. He was still a teenager when he sat in for two weeks with Art Blakey at Mikell’s and ended up declining the drummer’s offer to join the Jazz Messengers. Instead\, he joined up with trumpeter Tom Browne\, with whom he started recording for GRP. Broom quickly became a staple at the label\, recording with Dave Grusin\, Dave Valentin\, and Bernard Wright and cutting his first two albums as a leader\, 1981’s Clean Sweep (GRP/Arista) and 1984’s Livin’ for the Beat (Arista). Johnson\nSharel Cassity is a celebrated saxophonist\, composer\, educator\, and recording artist\, recognized as the “Rising Star Alto Saxophone” of 2023 by DownBeat Magazine. With nearly two decades of global performance experience\, she has made her mark as both a bandleader and sideman\, collaborating with renowned artists including Wynton Marsalis\, the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra\, Roy Hargrove\, Herbie Hancock\, Nicholas Payton\, Dee Dee Bridgewater\, Paquito D’Rivera\, Jimmy Heath\, Michel Camilo\, and the Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars\, among others. \nSteeped in the jazz tradition\, Sharel maintains a prominent presence as a jazz artist while also dedicating herself to education as the Director of Jazz at the University of Virginia and through her non-profit program\, Jazz Up. She performs at a professional level across both classical and jazz genres on saxophone\, flute\, and clarinet. Sharel is committed to building upon the legacies of jazz masters while remaining attuned to contemporary and future musical developments. \nRichard D Johnson is an accomplished composer and arranger with eight musical releases as a leader. Johnson’s full bio. \n\n \n12 – 1 pm \nJo Ann Daugherty Trio plus vocalist Bruce Henry\nVocalist Bruce Henry is a composer\, historian\, storyteller\, and performer extraordinaire. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Nina Simone\, Stevie Wonder\, Al Jarreau and John Coltrane\, Bruce has an unforgettable voice with a versatility few can match: his three-and-a-half-octave range allows him to roam from baritone to falsetto with ease. His artistry has taken him to five continents\, and he has recorded for the BBC\, Disney\, HBO and numerous national ad campaigns. In addition\, Bruce has performed with and opened for the likes of Doc Severinsen\, Roberta Flack\, Chris Botti\, Ramsey Lewis\, Stéphane Grappelli\, Jimmy Jam\, and Sounds of Blackness. \nPianist Jo Ann Daugherty loves making all kinds of music and has traveled the country and globe\, playing at the Chicago Jazz Festival\, Satchmo Fest New Orleans\, Jazz at Lincoln Center Shanghai\, Havana Jazz Festival in Cuba\, and more.
