Join Prof. John W. Hall as he surveys recent works on early American warfare and biographies of George Washington (along with his own writings) to reconcile divergent interpretations of Washington as a paragon of frontier martial virtue\, a pedant for European orthodoxy\, a genius\, and a stumblebum. The officer who emerges is a martial cosmopolitan; the forces he constructed and the strategy by which he employed them were the hybrid products of his own experience on the American frontier and European precedents for both grande and petite guerre. Ultimately\, they served his nation’s dearest interests: independence and territorial expansion.\n\nRegister \n \nAbout the Speaker\n Dr. John W. Hall is the Ambrose-Hesseltine Chair in U.S. Military History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison\, where he co-chairs the War in Society and Culture Program and directs the Officer Education Program. He is the author of Uncommon Defense: Indian Allies in the Black Hawk War (Harvard\, 2009) and numerous essays on early American warfare. He is a past president of the Society for Military History and a retired U.S. Army Reserve colonel with past assignments as the chief of the Future Studies Branch of the U.S. Army’s Future Warfare Division and as a historian to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point\, U.S. European Command\, U.S. Central Command\, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

DESCRIPTION:Cantigny 5k\nSaturday\, October 17 \n\n2026 Shirt Design\nThe Cantigny 5K Run/Walk is a benefit for the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans\, and registrants may enjoy access to Cantigny for the rest of the day. \nThe course tours the grounds of Cantigny. Please note that due to construction at Cantigny Golf\, the course will be modified this year. Digital clocks or timers will be located at mile markers. Water stations will be set up at the halfway mark and at the start/finish line. \nMidwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans\nAll proceeds from the Cantigny 5K Run/Walk will benefit the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans in Wheaton\, IL. The shelter is a not-for-profit transitional living facility that provides assistance to U.S. veterans of any era\, the opportunity to return to useful and productive lives by providing them with the skills for independent living. \nRegistration Information\n5K chip-timed race (price is for any runner or walker of any age who plans to participate)\n$20 through July 1\n$25 (July 2 – September 19)\n$30 (September 20 – October 15)\n$45 (October 16 – October 17\, Must register in person at Cantigny) \n1-Mile Run (non-chipped\, for ages 6-10): $5\n1/4-Mile Run (non-chipped\, for ages 0-5): $5 \nRace Schedule\nFriday\, October 16\, 2026\n11 am – 7 pm: Early packet pick-up\, Visitors Center \nSaturday\, October 17\, 2026\n7 am – 8:45 am: Packet Pick-up\, Visitors Center\n7:30 am – 12:30 pm: American Legion Pancake Breakfast\n9 am: 5K Run/Walk Start\n10 am: 5K Awards Ceremony\, followed by 1-mile and ¼-mile runs \nYour disposable timing chip will be included with your packet and attached to the back of your bib number.\nThe parking fee will be waived for registered participants picking up their packets. \nRegister \n2026 Course – Map Coming Soon!\nDue to the course renovation at Cantigny Golf\, our 5k course will not be certified this year or next. This year’s course is mapped below. Most of the course routes through Cantigny Golf. The course was mapped as close to 3.1 miles as possible using “Map My Run”\, so the distance is uncertified. Please understand if your smart devices track differently during the race.
