Bulb Care

  • Replant your pre-loved and lightly used tulip bulbs immediately in spring so you can better see where other bulbs and plants are located in your garden.
  • Be gentle with your bareroot tulip plants. Avoid bruising foliage. Make sure the leaves and stem from the bulb are not broken off during transport or handling since these green tissues supply nourishment to the bulb.
  • If you can’t plant them right away, bulbs may be allowed to dry for 2 to 3 weeks. Then place the bulbs in a mesh bag and store them in a cool, dry place such as a garage or basement until fall planting.
  • Plant your bulbs 4”-6” apart, at a depth 3x as deep as the height of the bulb (approximately 6”-8”). Fertilize tulips bulbs with a 4-4-2 organic bulb fertilizer or bonemeal in the fall.
  • Enjoy next year’s blooms. Just remember that not all modern hybridized tulip varieties are exceptional perennials that reliably come back and bloom perfectly year after year.
  • Don’t remove the foliage after planting until it naturally turns yellow, withers and can be pulled away from the bulb with a gentle tug. Bulbs use their foliage to produce the energy needed to form flowers next year.
