Tribute to Miles Davis: The Chicago Jazz Orchestra featuring Victor Garcia
The Chicago Jazz Orchestra (CJO) is recognized as the city’s oldest continuously operating professional jazz orchestra, with a history stretching back to its founding in 1978 as the Jazz Members Big Band. Established by Jeff Lindberg and the late Steve Jensen, the ensemble solidified its reputation early on by opening the first-ever Chicago Jazz Festival in 1979. Over the past four decades, the CJO has cemented its status as a cornerstone of Chicago’s jazz scene, maintaining a commitment to performing, preserving, and advancing the artistry of big band jazz.
Composed of top-tier Chicago musicians, the orchestra is renowned for its versatile repertoire and authentic performances of classic big band swing, as well as modern arrangements. Under the direction of Jeff Lindberg, the CJO has garnered national acclaim, often cited as one of the finest jazz repertory orchestras in the country, having performed numerous times for the Kennedy Center Honors Gala in Washington, D.C. They have worked with prestigious guests such as Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder, Clark Terry, Kurt Elling, and many others.
The Chicago Jazz Orchestra has extended its reach through significant recordings, including a tribute to Wes Montgomery with guitarist Bobby Broom titled More Amor, as well as a collaboration with vocalist Cyrille Aimée on the album Burstin’ Out! … both of which highlight their ability to navigate complex arrangements with swing and elegance. Beyond the stage, the CJO continues its mission to honor the tradition of American jazz music while ensuring it remains a living, evolving art form for audiences today.
